The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for organizing and administering a comprehensive assortment of recreation programs, athletic leagues, and special events for youth, teens, adults, senior citizens, and families.  The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department is proud to offer an outdoor pool, pond, playgrounds, picnic shelters, athletic fields, trails, outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, pickleball courts (COMING SOON), sledding hill, indoor gymnasium, skate park (COMING SOON), Teen Center, Recreation Hall, Civic Center, Gardens at Coe Memorial Park, and Carl Bozenski’s Christmas Village.

The Parks and Recreation Department administers a wide variety of programs including: Summer playground programs, trips, dance and fitness classes, adult and youth sports leagues, vocal competitions, both a Winter and Summer concert series, and much more. 

The Parks and Recreation Department also has many popular special events that are available to the community throughout the year.  Some of the special events offered include: Nighmare on South Main Street, Light-Up Torrington, Christmas Village Annual Appeal, Christmas Village Parade, Holiday Decorating Contest, Easter Egg Hunt, Northwest Vocal Showcase, Summer Concert Series, Winter Concert Series, Mayor’s Polka Night, Community Tag Sale, Lions Club Craft & Gift Fair, and our Fireworks and Carnival.  The Parks and Recreation Department has collaborated with various organizations on events including the Mayor’s Committee on Youth, Arts and Culture Commission, Torrington Lions Club, Torrington Police Activities League, First Congregational Church of Torrington, and Torrington Municipal and Teachers Federal Credit Union. 

In addition to organizing programs, the Recreation Department administers facility rentals at the Armory and Coe Memorial Park Civic Center.  Both facilities were rented by many local organizations, community agencies, and private users.  The Parks and Recreation Department also schedules and prepares athletic fields for use by many local organizations at Alvord Park, Bishop Donnelly Sports Complex, Fuessenich Park, Oak Avenue Sports Complex, Joe Ruwet Park, John Toro Sports Complex, and Major William Besse Park.
