Residential Recycling
Q: Where can I get a blue recycling bin?
A: The Public Works office, Room 311, 140 Main Street provides free blue recycling bins only for new residents and also replaces missing bins.
Q: What and how do I recycle?
Q: What about styrofoam material, such as meat trays, or fast food trays, are those recyclable?
A: The City of Torrington does not recycle foam. These items should be put in with your regular trash.
Q: I have too many items to recycle and they all won't fit into the blue recycling bin. Can I put the items in another container for recycling?
A: Waste Management typically will not pick up recyclables in bins other than the blue recycling bins. However, when you have an overflow in your blue recycling bin, you can tie up bundles of newspapers with string, or put other recyclables in paper bags next to the blue bin.
Q: Why did my recyclables not get picked up?
A: It could have been a number of reasons. The most common one being the recyclables were put into plastic bags. The use of plastic bags is no longer acceptable. The items should be placed in paper bags or tied up with string. Perhaps, the items are not on the recyclables list. Waste Management should leave a card explaining why the items were not picked up.
Q: I have large quantities of office paper. How can I recycle this?
A: Call the Public Works Office at 489-2232 to set up an appointment to bring the paper to the rear of City Hall for deposit into an office paper recycling bin. This bin is locked so be sure to call first.
